Advancement Beyond First Class

Requirements for advancing to Star, Life, and Eagle rank are found on pages 444-47 of the Handbook. Whereas advancement into the lower three ranks requires the scout to learn basic survival skills, requirements for the upper three ranks emphasize personal education, leadership skills, and community service. Advancing into the last three ranks also requires a scout to slow down and spend specified amounts of time in each rank. Each rank requires a scout to earn a number of merit badges. Twenty-one merit badges are necessary to reach Eagle rank, including twelve specific badges (those described on pages 188–89 of the Handbook). Service in leadership positions is also required, either in an elected troop office or by appointment by the Scoutmaster.
