FAQ
- What happened to the old Troop 12 page?
- The old Troop 12 page was archaic. It was difficult to navigate, and Internet Explorer would not readily support the
Javascript coding used to create the links. This did not make the page user friendly, and sometimes impossible to use. The new design is easier to navigate, complete with a site map. The new page also supports all web browsers (though it is best viewed using Mozilla Firefox) and all users.
- What if I find an error on the web page or outdated information?
Please contact the web master, Justin Brunelle at jbrunelle@cs.odu.edu, alerting him of the error or incorrect info. If possible, please send an updated version of the file or simply a text version of the correction.

What equipment does our Scout need to start?
- The troop provides stoves, lanterns, and patrol cooking gear. He will need:
- Uniform shirt. The only items a Scout needs when he joins Troop 12 is a BSA shirt and handbook, which are available at the Scout Shop. The troop has an informal uniform exchange, and there are generally some shirts, in the smaller sizes that have been outgrown by older Scouts. Ask a uniformed leader about this.
- Uniform pants. An essential part of the scout uniform, their purchase can be delayed if the cost of purchasing the whole uniform would be burdensome.
- Neckerchiefs should not be purchased. Scouts are given them by the Troop at no cost after they have participated in their first camp out.
- BSA hats
- Minimal camping equipment. Before he first campout, a new Scout should have his own water bottle, mess kit, flashlight with good batteries, rain gear, and a sleeping bag.
- Other equipment can be purchased over a period of time, and the Troop has some equipment that can be borrowed. The unformed leaders are available to provide guidance on what the equipment options are, what seems to work best, and where the best selection of prices can be found.
- Any family that needs financial assistance in providing the Scout with appropriate equipment should not hesitate to talk with the Scoutmaster.
- Please remember to label all clothing and equipment!
-
What is a patrol?
- Every Boy Scout troop is made up of patrols, groups of six to ten boys who work together as a team. Each patrol elects its own leader. The Patrol Leaders, with a troop elected Senior Patrol Leader as their head, form the Patrol Leader's Council. It is this council's job to plan and run the troop program. Each Patrol Leader represents his patrol on the council, and interprets to his patrol the plans and decisions the council makes.

How fast can our Scout advance in rank?
- Scouts who apply themselves can reach First Class rank in their first year. Please see the About Scouting link on the menu to the left.
